Digital Fabric Printing is the act of printing digital files on to fabric. We wanted to share some tips and the potential benefits of Digital Fabric Printing before you make a decision of printing your fav image or patterns on fabric.

Why should I consider printing on fabric?

If you are a fashion designer, textile designer, interior designer, or an entrepreneur who wish to build your own label. Digital fabric printing is for you. You can customise your own unique designs efficiently and cost effectively. It provides a profitable revenue stream to business owners.

What applications suit printing on fabric?

From marketers looking to amplify a brand awareness activity such as a conference or trade show, to business branded workwear and point of sale textiles. Plus, there’s also a growing requirement within B2C sector including personalised home furnishings, accessories and printed sports team apparel.

How does my artwork need to be set up textiles? How does it differ from flyers, brochures etc?

Direct to textile printing uses a very similar method to traditional print, but ideally you should use 150 dpi and digital formats such as jpegs or pdf only.

What is the most cost effective way to print onto fabric, can you print white onto a coloured fabric for example?

The best method for polyester textiles is sublimation transfer, however you won’t be able to print white images or text. With cotton, which are popular with customers exhibiting at trade shows, you can use pigment printing which means you can easily print white onto dark textile items. White as colour cannot be printed, any areas in the image that are white will be the colour of the fabric.

Which fabric shouldn’t I print on?

With pigment printing you can print onto almost any textile as long as it doesn’t have a waterproof coating. However when printing onto light weight fabrics, you’ll need to be careful with the amount of ink you use otherwise it could result in you loosing the original hand feel and drape of the fabric.

Why would I choose digital fabric printing over more traditional methods?

Digital printing has a considerably shorter production method in terms of both time and machinery. It allows you to save time and resources. Those of you who wish to consider environment issues, digital textile printing saves a HUGE amount of water compared to conventional printing.

Does it use CMYK?

Yes, CMYK comes as standard with the option of additional colours dependant on the type of printing machinery. Prior to providing your artwork, please save your files as CMYK to be compatible with our printer. If you see black on the computer screen it does not mean that this colour will be printed as black as you see it. The black colour in your artwork may not be necessary appropriate for commercial printing. If you are after pure black colour ensure that all four CMYK options are set to 100%, C=100%, M=100%, Y=100%, K=100%, in both Photoshop and Illustration when developing your artwork. For very fine details such as small text or lines, only K can be set to 100%.
